Influencing Travel Behaviour – Winter newsletter for businesses

Welcome to our newsletter for Leeds businesses. It has lots of useful information to help you promote safe and sustainable travel in your organisation this winter.

Winter Wheelers

With the right gear and guidance, winter weather needn’t stop you from to cycling to work. For help and advice to encourage your riders to keep cycling through the winter, check out Love to Ride’s winter riding tips. Encourage your colleagues, staff and friends to sign up to the Winter Wheelers challenge for a chance to win great prizes, unlock discounts and enter the prize draw for bikes and vouchers for local bike shops.

Why not hold a cycle safety ‘Dr Bike’ event to make sure bikes are safe for the winter conditions? Or hold a winter themed cyclist’s breakfast to reward staff who brave the elements. Make sure you have good changing and drying facilities available for staff who cycle, walk or run to work. Invest in hi-visibility clothing, bags or rucksacks with hi-visibility strips and fluorescent and reflective armbands that can be worn over coats, so that staff who walk, run or cycle to work are more visible to other road users on their commute. The Influencing Travel Behaviour have winter goody bags to give away to businesses hosting a winter event, drop us an email detailing your event and we will chose the 3 best entries.

Results of the 2019 Leeds Travel to Work Survey

Over 28,000 employees of organisations across the city participated in the annual survey – thank you to all those that took part. The results highlight the continuing increase in the number of respondents travelling to work by sustainable modes of travel. The most significant changes are in overall public transport use, which has increased from 27.9% in 2015 to 31.2% in 2019 and in the number of inner city commuters walking to work, which has increased from 9.6% in 2015 to 12.2% in 2019. This is encouraging news in terms of council’s aim to tackle the Climate Emergency and for Leeds commuters’ health, with more employees choosing an easy way to build in active travel on their journey to work. Here are the full survey results.

The survey, which started in 2002, is only possible thanks to the dedication and hard work of site travel plan coordinators working across the city, and the tens of thousands of employees who share details of their travel to work every year. The data collected is used for site travel plan monitoring, and to inform future transport investment decisions. The next survey is set to be launched in March 2020.

Connecting Leeds

Connecting Leeds is the ambition to transform travel in Leeds for people who live, work in and visit the city. It has been developed in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and other partners following a city wide transport conversation with the public. Work has now begun on major highway improvements to improve bus services, park and ride facilities and walking and cycling infrastructure in the city. Work is already underway on The Headrow, Scott Hall Road A61 (N), Gloucester Terrace, Holt Lane, Moortown Corner and at Elland Road Park and Ride. For more information about the time scale for these schemes and about other proposed improvements at the Corn Exchange and on key routes and at transport hubs, visit Transforming Travel and Leeds Transport Hubs.

Are you ready for winter driving?

Now we are in the midst of winter and all the joys that come with it, it is a good time to remind ourselves about how we can keep ourselves and others safer when driving, particularly in adverse weather conditions. For advice for those driving to and from work, for work, or in their own time, check out our blog about getting ready for the cold spell.

‘Tis the season to be jolly (and safe)

Every year, hundreds of people are injured in Great Britain in collisions involving drink driving. While this number has reduced quite dramatically over the last 50 years of campaigning, there are still some drivers who are willing to risk having one or two drinks before getting behind the wheel. And even if you’re not drinking, it’s worth being aware of the increased numbers of partygoers who may be out and about if you’re driving through busy areas. Our blog has lots of important information about the issues and consequences of drink driving.
