Schools Yorkshire Tour 2019

Well done to all the schools who took part in the Schools Yorkshire Tour 2019. The cycle baton relay aimed at primary, secondary and SEND schools across Yorkshire was originally  created by Leeds City Council to encourage our children and young people to cycle to school whilst improving their cycling skills.

14 Schools from Leeds took part in this year’s Schools Yorkshire Tour. The tour started at York Minister on 10thJune to celebrate national Bike Week and made its way through ten local authorities including; North Yorkshire, Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield, Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham before ultimately finishing in Doncaster in the Sir Nigel Gresley Square on the 2nd July 2019.

Farewell Anne

Well it’s time to say goodbye to our Anne after 15 years’ service to Leeds City Council as a Road Safety Trainer, so it’s time for Anne to hang up her Hi Viz jacket and sit back and relax, that is when she gets out of the swimming pool and garden.

Looking back on how Anne filled her time with the team reminded me of what a fantastic person and trainer she was!!

She also worked on projects which included training the School Crossing Patrol team, training volunteers to operate a Walking Bus, leading giant Park and Stride walks to school and supporting and leading internal events. From, Scootember, School Yorkshire Tour, Clean Air Day, Bike Week and many many more. Will we ever be able to replace Anne? I hope so as those were great times. We all wish Anne a safe and sustainable retirement.

Going forward – the rest of the training team will be busy working within schools delivering FREE road safety training. Have you got yours booked in.

If you would like to book some road safety training for your school please contact road.safety@leeds.gov.uk.

Clean Air Day

On Thursday 20th June 2019 eleven schools across Leeds closed the streets outside their school for Clean Air Day.  Schools asked parents and carers to walk, cycle or scoot their children to school or park further away from the school entrance to enable pupils to play out safely on the street outside school. If less people depended on their car for the school pick up/ drop off and used a more active mode of travel to school how much safer and less polluted the area around school would be.

The purpose of the day was to trial the impact of Play Street road closures outside school to help reduce air pollution, improve children’s health, develop community cohesion and to encourage more local play street closures in the neighbourhood.

A massive thank you to the schools involved and their cooperation on the day.

Find out more about the Play Streets scheme here.

Walk to School Week

This Walk to School Week the children of Leeds we’re asked to help ‘Turn the leaves green’ by choosing to walk, scoot or cycle to school. The green Walk to School Week theme coincided with the work already being undertaken throughout Leeds to improve air quality.

Schools encouraged pupils to complete active journeys to and from school in order to reduce traffic around schools, thereby reducing air pollution and making the area around schools a more pleasant place for all. Incentives were provided to help promote the event. There was also a competition with a prize awarded from Leeds City Council for the school with the greenest tree.

We are pleased to announce that St Paul’s Catholic Primary School’s ‘Tree’ was chosen as the winning tree. St Paul’s Catholic Primary School have won a fun day of activities that will be delivered by our very own road safety trainers.

Scootember

It’s the time for scooting to school this Scootember!   Every September the Influencing Travel Behaviour Team asks for participation in scooting to school to help reduce congestion at the school gates, improve air quality and to encourage pupils to lead more healthy active lifestyles.

As schools, you can promote sustainable travel by encouraging children and parents to leave the car at home and scoot to school.

Our Road Safety Team is also able to provide scooter training to all year groups as part of its road safety programme. Please e-mail road.safety@leeds.gov.uk to enquire about the training available.
